Excavator Operator/Labourer – March 2020
Diggin’ It Excavating on Salt Spring Island, BC is looking for a new addition to our team. We are a busy full-service excavation company that specializes in excavating, septic system installation, landscaping, driveway construction and maintenance, trenching and underground utility installation, demolition, waste disposal and trucking.
We are looking for a team member who works well with others, is eager, shows a sense of pride in a job well done and can follow verbal instructions.
Key responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Excavator Operator & Labourer include, but are not limited to:
EQUIPMENT OPERATION & LABOUR
Operate the excavator and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner while maintaining excellent awareness of one’s surroundings.
Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refill equipment as necessary.
Work with team members in the excavation and installation process of laying pipe on line and grade.
Follow directions of team members regarding craning, gravel placement and grading.
Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure the smooth operation of the Excavator, tools and vehicles.
General labour associated with excavating, including digging, raking and transferring of materials.
Keeping tools, vehicles and machines clean and in excellent working order.
SAFETY
Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety standards, and encourage all employees, subcontractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the well being of others.
TEAMWORK
Participate as a vital team member, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support, as required.
Promote a team approach and maintain a dialogue with all employees to exchange information and gather ideas.
Collaborate with any project teams on other special initiatives, as required.
Keeping track of machine and labour time for jobs as well as own hours for timesheets.
Communicate any problems, machine malfunctions or tool requirements with the team leader in a timely manner.
QUALIFICATIONS & WORK EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma
Class 5 Driver’s License
Minimum 3 to 5 years’ related experience
2 to 3 years of experience operating an Excavator
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of Excavators and other heavy equipment.
Knowledge pipes and materials used in septic installation and general hardscaping
Ability to use an iPad for communication, documentation and tracking jobs and processes.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 LBS on a regular basis.
Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
